How XPO Built a Smarter, More Efficient Fleet

Summary

  • XPO, one of North America’s largest LTL carriers, needed its telematics and weigh station bypass to work together so fleet managers could act on granular data and drivers would get short in-cab alerts instead of distractions.
  • They paired Samsara’s AI-enabled telematics with Fleetworthy Weigh Station Bypass and real-time safety alerts, delivered hardware-free through geofencing. Samsara and Fleetworthy collaborated early and resolved backend conflicts within 36 hours.
  • In just over 20 months, XPO logged 369,000 weigh station bypasses, returned 30,000 hours of drive time to drivers, saved 147,821 gallons of fuel, and reduced CO2 emissions by 1,707 tons, with fewer speeding, no-seatbelt, and inattentive driving alerts.

The Challenge

Fleet efficiency is a necessity for a carrier of XPO’s size, and it touches safety, operating costs, and sustainability all at once.

That takes more than visibility alone. XPO needed its telematics and its bypass service to work together, so fleet managers could see granular operational data and act on it right away, and so drivers would get short, impactful in-cab alerts that correct behavior in real time instead of becoming a distraction. Integrating two platforms across a fleet this size raised its own questions, so Samsara and Fleetworthy collaborated early to make sure their systems communicated seamlessly.

“[With Fleetworthy] we can take a granular approach – all the way down to how many times we go to specific scales or how long those stops are taking.”
Riley Anderson, Manager of Safety, XPO

The Solution

XPO deployed Samsara’s AI-enabled telematics, which connects people, vehicles, and backend systems and delivers real-time fuel monitoring, idling reduction, video-based safety monitoring, and in-cab coaching. Fleetworthy added hardware-free weigh station bypass and real-time safety alerts, delivered directly to in-cab devices through geofencing.

Early collaboration between Samsara and Fleetworthy kept the two systems communicating seamlessly, even resolving backend conflicts within 36 hours. Samsara’s performance insights pair with Fleetworthy’s real-time bypass services, giving fleet managers granular visibility into operational data and the ability to act on it immediately.

The Results

Since August 2024, XPO has logged 369,000 weigh station bypasses with Fleetworthy, saving an estimated 3.5 years of drive time and 147,821 gallons of fuel and reducing CO2 emissions by 1,707 tons.* With Samsara, XPO has seen fewer speeding instances, fewer no-seatbelt alerts, and less inattentive driving.

XPO tracks bypass events, coaching activities, speeding alerts, and crash incident reductions to cut accidents and claims dollars and to help spot the next area for improvement for the fleet. Drivers value the short in-cab alerts, which prompt real-time corrections instead of distractions.

Integration Matters

Samsara’s and Fleetworthy’s solutions work together to help XPO turn real-time data into actionable decisions, pairing seamless insight-sharing with in-cab coaching and alerts that support safer, more compliant driving. And because the integration can scale across a large fleet, XPO can extend these improvements across its operations without starting from scratch.

About XPO

XPO is one of North America’s largest less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers, with more than 13,000 drivers, 44,000 tractors and trailers, and 36,000 customers. To improve safety, cut operating costs, and advance sustainability at scale, XPO pairs Samsara’s AI-enabled telematics with Fleetworthy’s hardware-free weigh station bypass and in-cab safety alerts.
