As a long-haul transportation provider operating across North America, Challenger Motor Freight faced increasing administrative and operational challenges tied to toll management and weigh station stops.
With over 1,200 trucks in its fleet and routes spanning Canada and the U.S., toll reconciliation had become a time-consuming burden. Fleet and safety teams were manually processing a high volume of toll bills from multiple authorities, making it difficult to track toll spend and ensure timely payments.
At the same time, drivers were frequently delayed at weigh stations—particularly in Ontario—adding costly downtime to already complex routes. With rising pressure to control costs and boost driver productivity, Challenger needed smarter tools to optimize both administrative workflows and time on the road.
Solution
To streamline operations and reduce costs, Challenger partnered with Fleetworthy Solutions, leveraging its Bestpass toll management and Drivewyze weigh station bypass services.
Challenger adopted Bestpass’s Complete Pass transponders across most of its U.S.-dispatched trucks, giving them access to consolidated billing, automatic payments, and full toll coverage nationwide. With all tolls processed under one account and discounted rates applied, Challenger eliminated the need for manual bill tracking and late-night reconciliations.
To address weigh station delays, the company switched to Drivewyze PreClear in 2020 after coverage expanded in Ontario. The service is fully integrated with Challenger’s ELD provider, ISAAC Instruments, enabling drivers to receive real-time visual and audible notifications about upcoming inspection sites—right from their in-cab devices.
This integration gave drivers more bypass opportunities and removed guesswork from inspections, while giving administrators monthly performance reports to track usage and savings.
Results
By implementing Bestpass and Drivewyze, Challenger saw measurable improvements in both cost control and operational efficiency:

- 6,851 weigh station bypasses in one month across Canada and the U.S.
- 571 hours of driver time saved in a single month
- ~$60,000 in cost savings from weigh station bypasses alone
Bestpass eliminated the need to track toll bills manually, while Drivewyze minimized driver downtime at weigh stations—especially in Ontario, where more than half of Challenger’s bypasses now occur.
