Bypass Restrictions

General Requirements to Use PreClear

To use PreClear, carriers need:

  • US DOT
  • License Plate Number
  • State of their license plate / aka jurisdiction

 

Important Notice

Drivers hauling oversize, overweight, or permitted loads must ignore Drivewyze bypass commands and pull into inspection sites in all states and provinces, unless explicitly stated otherwise under the exceptions.

 

State Restrictions

Drivers must ignore bypass commands and report to the inspection station when the following conditions apply unless explicitly stated otherwise under the exceptions.

Agriculture, livestock, or bulk fuel loads
Arizona (AZ)
All placarded hazmat loads must report for inspection.
Colorado (CO)
Piggy-back / drive-away loads
Florida (FL) (Agriculture Sites Only)
All vehicles must pull into Florida Agriculture Sites for inspection unless they meet exception criteria
Idaho (ID)
Carriers operating with or required to operate with an Oversize or Overweight permit must report to the scale, even if they receive a bypass command, unless they qualify under the listed exceptions. In case of a discrepancy between Drivewyze command and an electronic road sign indicating “Pull In,” the driver must ignore the bypass command and pull into the inspection station

Agricultural and livestock loads
Kentucky (KY)
All vehicles operating with an over-dimension permit
Massachusetts (MA)
All placarded flammable loads must report for inspection
Maryland (MD)
All placarded hazardous materials and hazardous waste loads
Mississippi (MS)
Private carriers transporting taxable petroleum products; All permitted loads must report for inspection
Mississippi (MS)
Manufactured housing haulers may follow bypass commands when not transporting an Oversize Manufactured house as approved by MS DOT
New Mexico (NM)
All drivers must obtain a Weight Distance Tax (WDT) Electronic Permit before bypassing scales. Unlicensed hazardous materials and unpermitted piggy-back/drive-away loads must report
Oregon (OR)
All vehicles must report to the first Port of Entry when arriving in the state. Vehicles hauling radioactive material must report unless an electronic permit has been filed
Pennsylvania (PA)
Placarded hazardous materials and hazardous waste loads; Oversize and Overweight vehicles/loads requiring a PennDOT Special Hauling Permit must report
South Dakota (SD)
Fleets can register vehicles with a South Dakota Annual Overweight Permit in Drivewyze to qualify for bypass, allowing registered vehicles to follow bypass commands when traveling overweight in the state
Utah (UT)
All non-divisible and unpermitted oversize/overweight loads must report
Wisconsin (WI)
Placard-bearing hazardous materials loads; In case of a discrepancy between Drivewyze command and an electronic road sign indicating “Pull In,” the driver must ignore the bypass command and pull into the inspection station

Bypass Exceptions

California (CA)
Drivers hauling hazardous materials, flammable liquids, or hazardous waste are permitted to follow bypass commands.
Florida (FL) (Agriculture Sites Only)
Vehicles enrolled in the Florida Agriculture Bypass Program only have to pull into the Agriculture site if they are hauling agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture, or livestock materials, or if they are hauling an empty or loaded reefer unit.Click here to learn more about the Florida Agriculture Bypass Program requirements and how to enroll.
Idaho (ID)
Fleets can register vehicles with an Idaho Annual Overweight Permit in Drivewyze to qualify for bypass, allowing registered vehicles to follow bypass commands when traveling overweight in the state
Kansas (KS)
Oversize/Overweight LCVs with a KTA permit at the South Haven Site only may follow bypass commands
Mississippi (MS)
Manufactured housing haulers may follow bypass commands when not transporting an Oversize Manufactured house as approved by MS DOT
Nevada (NV)
Oversize loads may follow bypass commands
South Dakota (SD)
Fleets can register vehicles with a South Dakota Annual Overweight Permit in Drivewyze to qualify for bypass, allowing registered vehicles to follow bypass commands when traveling overweight in the state
Utah (UT)
Fleets can register vehicles with a Utah Annual Overweight Permit in Drivewyze to qualify for bypass, allowing registered vehicles to follow bypass commands when traveling overweight in the state

Electronic Message Board/Variable Message Signs

Drivewyze users can continue to follow in-cab messages when approaching sites where there are roadside message boards. Except in states where restrictions exist (Wisconsin and Idaho). In these two states, please follow the message boards.

 

Using Multiple Bypass Services

A driver that operates both Drivewyze and another transponder-based bypass service may visit sites where both bypass programs are in operation at the same time. If you are using multiple bypass programs, you may receive conflicting messages when approaching a weigh station that supports both programs. In this case, if either Drivewyze or the other bypass service indicates you should pull in into the site, you must pull in if the station is open. You can only legally bypass if both programs indicate you should bypass. For this reason, it is important for drivers and carriers let Drivewyze know if they intend to operate Drivewyze alongside a second bypass service, so that drivers do not see conflicting commands from both services. If there’s ever a situation where Drivewyze and the transponder show conflicting messages, please be aware that any pull-in commands from either service MUST be obeyed. Failure to do so may result in a citation by enforcement agencies.
